Site maintenance

I'm still not happy with the mod_rewrite rules I was able to come up with, nor the current path to the blog. I am backing everything up tonight in the hopes that over the next couple of evenings I can remove everything from its old location and remap the blog back to its old location. I realize this has been a lot of changes to go through in the last few weeks, but I think its necessary at this time. I am also currently keeping my eye out for other hosting environments as the issues involved with running ruby on rails here are not quite worth the amount of time I'm having to put into it. I'm looking at jumping ship to textdrive, as they are actively supporting Ruby on Rails development, but they aren't currently taking any new customers.

blogging by hand

Well I have hosting again, but havent put anything up yet. The main concern was being able to keep the email continuity. It is amazing what a liberating feeling it is to be able to shut off the computer when you are doen with it.

For the last 4 years we have run our domain out of the house on a static ip. Seemed a cool thing to do all those years ago, but wow, what a nice feeling to not worry if the server is up or not. S was quite annoyed with me calling home at all times of the day to have her take a look cause itâ??s not responding again.

We are getting all settled in our house. Lots and lots of boxes, allergies are high as we unpack all the dust that we have brought 2000 miles just to torment me.

The Family is adjusting( not that we need to adjust)to Eugene quite well. Where we were on the way left fringe for the middle of Kansas, we now find that we are mainstream. We have moved into quite a progressive neighborhood, with plenty of children for ours to play with.

Even without the Internet to conect us, the world seems quite small, as our next door neighbor, grew up in the same area as I did, in fact she was good friends with the little sister of one of my boyhood friends. What are the chances when you consider that I am now living 2226.08 miles (based on mapquest) away from there.

Firewall

Sorry about being down for the day.

Somehow I accidentally set the firewall to block port 80, I am still not sure how I did this. But that accounted for the webportion of the server being down.

Site Monitoring

I have been using Internetseer to monitor my server, and verify that it is online. I haven’t had any complaints with them, though as a free service I receive a few pieces of mail occasionally.

Today, I received a notification that my server was down, just after we left the house. Already running late, I decided to just skip it and see if it was just a minor glitch. A few minutes later I received an alert to my phone, something coming from yahoo. At this point I started waiting for the second message from Internetseer, as yahoo sends my alerts to an email account set up on my server, that I then forward to my phone. This way I can give someone an email address that will always get to me, as text, but not give them the ability to call me.

Nothing came in from Internetseer for a few hours, and when it did come in, it was a notification that my server was still down. Problem with this time was that I was actively connected to the server at that time. Checking my mail, and using the webserver to post a comment to this blog. I am still waiting for the all clear, and have been using the server for 45 minutes.

I guess they still have a few bugs to work out.
