Pictures are Gone

As Dave Brown can attest, Macintoshes are not immune to little children. We had an attack here just the other night. I am still discovering what was lost in the attack. I do know that finally all pictures taken after 2002 are definitely gone, unless I can find where I stashed the backup discs—but that was at least one move ago, and possibly two.

Leaving yourself logged in and not at the computer defeats the most secure operating system, Kiaya is feeling left out with not having time to use the computer, so she is helping herself when she has a chance. The other night she came into the kitchen while we were fixing dinner and said something into moms ear. I later learned that the computer stopped working.

upon restarting, we noticed that our desktop was restored to the default, but thought nothing of it. Looking in the dock we were greeted by a large number of question marks, where the applications icon should be, and finally upon starting mail, we were asked to create an account. It slowly dawned on us, a bad thing® had happened.

A best as I am able, the path of destruction she visited, knocked out Pictures and Music in my user directory, as well as my Library Folder. Where they went? I have no clue, I have searched the drives over and over trying to find a trace of them. She spared the Movies folder as well as some random files dropped in the root of my user account.

Yes, i have reset the scheduled backup and spent the last few minute verifying that it ran last night. I also added a second Job, to run once a week to get the /Users as well as the /Library Directories.

Late Night looking for Photos

After I posted that last entry, I thought it would be time to put a banner image up for the site. I wanted a photo that was panoramic to show all of nowhere. Opening up iPhoto I quickly( not usual for iPhoto 2.0) scrolled through the last few rolls of images, and came to the end of the library. 83 images was the grand total. opening the Finder I verified that the images were still present. They just had gotten lost from the iPhoto configuration.

Stuck with the laborious process of importing all of the last few years pictures back into the iPhoto Library, I decided to give iPhoto Library Manager a try. This would allow me to break the large collection up into several different Libraries, one for each year. Somewhere in the first six months, disaster once again struck. 2004 now has a grand total of 0 images, you heard that right 0, none, zilch, null.

The only surviving photos of Eugene are those few I have posted in the last few days. Luckily we have tons more time to take more pictures, and I can still see the kids smiles as they tried Kayaking last week, and the Kids smiles are what matter in the end.

Update (8/8/04):

While trying to import more pictures into iPhoto, I was denied access to the iPhoto library folder. Upon closer examation, I had removed all my access to the iPhoto library folder. A simple chmod later and all the images were restored to their former glory.

For Joe and Aaron

chris.clark.ctsg1.jpgJust so that they know I appreciated the effort they put into work today I give you this image, in its original, though resized, glory. If you dare to click on it you will see what happens to images with a few bored programmers and a copy of photoshop (that would always be an adobe trademark and never used as a verb). Enjoy!

Ice Storm

We had a storm last night, came down as rain and sleet, but froze as it landed. It created quite a beautiful site

Frozen Roses

coating everything in crystal. During the night Sarieah woke me to look around, she had heard something that sounded as if a transformer blew, luckily for us that wasn’t the case. We still had power, though it has flickered on and off quite frequently, luckily the computers are on batteries for just that reason. I need to get a few more batteries for the periphreals though, the switch, and wireless bridge are not on backups, so we have had our connectivity disrupted several time today.

Our front walk is filled with branches from the huge cottonwood in our front, they have continued to fall throughout the day, lnding on the roof and sliding to the ground. Luckily they all seem to be breaking at the very top where they are still small, if the whole branch were to go we would have a new rain/ snow roof to deal with. Several branches have given us quite a scare with the power supply, knocking the wires loose, though still connected. They are down at a height that would be dangerous for people moving through that area. Though they are in an area of the yard that has no traffic through it.

The picture above is a closeup of the wild rose growing in the back, it has warmed up into the 50s and 60s recently, so you can see growth on the branches. I thought they looked quite beautiful, the reds and greens hidden under a layer of ice. Throughout the day, the ice has been slowly melting, so I believe we might escape with no more broken branches.
