Long Time Gone

Once again I find myself in the position of having to explain my long absence. Lack of connectivity at home is the long and the short of it. While my job almost requires me to have a web browser open all day, Unfortunately I dont get paid to write on my blog.
All of this lack of attention should come to an end as I finally placed the order for DSL, took two days after getting the phone installed. So they tell me 5 business days till I too can surf the web from my abode. That also means I can import all of my old entries and give people a real reason for coming to the site again. I am still in the search engines for a wide array of oddball topics, and seem to get a fair bit of traffic from those old entries.

blogging by hand

Well I have hosting again, but havent put anything up yet. The main concern was being able to keep the email continuity. It is amazing what a liberating feeling it is to be able to shut off the computer when you are doen with it.

For the last 4 years we have run our domain out of the house on a static ip. Seemed a cool thing to do all those years ago, but wow, what a nice feeling to not worry if the server is up or not. S was quite annoyed with me calling home at all times of the day to have her take a look cause itâ??s not responding again.

We are getting all settled in our house. Lots and lots of boxes, allergies are high as we unpack all the dust that we have brought 2000 miles just to torment me.

The Family is adjusting( not that we need to adjust)to Eugene quite well. Where we were on the way left fringe for the middle of Kansas, we now find that we are mainstream. We have moved into quite a progressive neighborhood, with plenty of children for ours to play with.

Even without the Internet to conect us, the world seems quite small, as our next door neighbor, grew up in the same area as I did, in fact she was good friends with the little sister of one of my boyhood friends. What are the chances when you consider that I am now living 2226.08 miles (based on mapquest) away from there.

Needs Updating

I took a look at the site today, thinking about some much needed updates. I was quite surprised to see that the front page had no content on it. Must be a sign of how busy I have been. I quickly set the index page to display articles for three weeks instead of the previous two. That at least put one article up for reading.

Why I have been so busy

  1. Work

As if anyone needs this reason explained. My new job is going great, I am spending quite long days there. Our work is highly political, and for some reason everyone has something they need to say this year.

Because it ties into work, I asked about putting up a client list to have a list of links to clients that I have been involved with. As long as I don’t comment on the non public issues, I can start to do this. Look for it to appear soon

  2. House Hunting

Though S worries that I am not spending enough time on it. I try to assure her that I am indeed looking hard

  3. Beer

Last weekend I started a new batch of Oatmeal stout. I love having the house smell like a brewery. Watching your own beer transform from malted grains, hops, water and yeast to Pure ambrosia over the course of several weeks is a must do for everyone.

  4. Bicycling

Still my only form of transportation, other than the bus. I started a story about my ride on the 10th of the month, but it never got out of draft stage. I rode around the fern ridge reservoir west of Eugene. Looked like on the map too be a little more than 30 miles when I was done.

I don’t always bike that far, but have been getting into the 5-10 mile range daily. Last weekend I hit some good hills to the south of town.

  5. Reading

I suspect I am averaging at least 500 pages a week easily. Limited TV reception and No computer access in the evenings.

  6. Movies

Watching quite a few movies from the library

Unfortunately the item I wish to have been number one on the list is still a months off, as soon as my family joins me out here, I expect to be extremely busy, just doing nothing but being with the kids again. I am hoping that the three of them will take up most of my free time, with whats left spent with S.

Upgrade

I upgraded to the latest release of Moveable Type. It contains upgrades to comments, for comment spam, luckily I am not popular enough for that yet, and it also supports atom for syndication. I must confess, I haven’t looked under the hood, so to speak, at the atom vs rss brewhaha, but I am interested in the new technology, and would like to take a look at it.

On the upgrade, things went smoothly, even though I performed it remotely, once I looked up the tar commands, having stuffit expander sure makes the command line a bit rusty.

Logging in and editing posts, I had no problems, and as soon as this is posted I am going to check out the front side and see what changes are there. I suspect the links section is once again visible, do I fill it, or remove it again.
